DynCost Calculator

The calculator works out an item's cost price from its route and BOM:

  • operations: time × hourly rate from the active DynCost price list;
  • material: consumption × the cost price from D365.

Then you can change anything to see what happens if a time, rate or material is different. Nothing is changed in D365.

Opening the calculator

  • With the calculator button in the toolbar, or through D365 Overzichten.
  • In DynCost with Open calculator.
  • In the Products page: an item's right-click menu (DynCost Calculator), or Open in DynCost Calculator on the Pricing tab.
  • In the Orders Dashboard, on a production order's Costs tab: Open in calculator. The calculator then takes over the order quantity and the order's site.

Each item opens in its own window. If you open the same item again, that window comes to the front. After a restart your calculator windows come back.

Calculating a cost price

  1. Click Choose an item….
  2. Search by number or name. You can also type a number and press Enter.
  3. Optionally enter a Configuration (empty = base item).
  4. Enter the Lot: the quantity per production order.
  5. Click Calculate.

If you then change only the lot, the calculator recalculates straight away.

Company. Choose the company at the top, or type it under Manual and click OK. ✕ goes back to your default company. If the item has no route or BOM in the chosen company, the calculator switches to the company that has them and says so.

Site. You don't choose the site yourself. It comes from the route or BOM version, or from the production order you opened the calculator from. The site decides the versions, the components' cost prices and the rates.

The screen

The calculator has three columns:

  1. Structure: the operations, material and surcharges as a tree.
  2. Edit: the fields of the line you choose on the left. If you choose the top line (the item itself), this shows the product details.
  3. Cost price per unit, with the price per lot, the setup part, the split over material, machine, labour, quantity cost, subcontract and surcharges, and the Margin.

Reading the tree

  • Each line shows the amount per finished unit at the current lot. Surcharge lines show a percentage.
  • Before the amount there is a quantity:
    • for material, the consumption per finished unit: Quantity ÷ Per series. If D365 says 1 LGT per 100, you see 0.01 LGT. Scrap and rounding are not included here.
    • for an operation, the number of pieces per hour.
  • An orange dot means a warning (point at the line for the explanation). A coloured dot means you changed the line.
  • A struck-through grey line doesn't count: Calculation is off, or the operation is replaced by a subcontract.
  • ↑/↓ move through the lines; → and ← expand and collapse sub-assemblies.

Sub-assemblies

With Sub-assemblies off, a sub-assembly counts at its cost price. With it on, the calculator costs it through its own route and BOM. As D365 does, it then calculates the sub-assembly for its standard order quantity, and your lot takes its share of that.

How the cost price is built up

  • Operation: setup time × rate + process time × (lot ÷ per quantity) × rate. Setup time counts once per lot. The rate is machine + labour from the active DynCost version; of the labour rate, only the labour share counts. A rate per piece is added on top.
  • Material: Quantity ÷ Per series × formula × lot, plus scrap and rounded up, times the cost price per inventory unit.
  • Subcontract: counts next to the route's operations, as in D365. With Replaces the operations you calculate as if the operations fall away.
  • Surcharges: only the surcharges you add yourself. The calculator doesn't take over D365's costing sheet (overheads).
  • Item without BOM and route: counts at its own cost price in D365.

The calculator never guesses. If a rate, cost price or unit conversion is missing, it counts as 0 and the result shows Incomplete — N warning(s). If there are only notes, you see N note(s). Click it to see the list, and click a warning to go to its line.

Choosing another BOM or route version

By default the calculator uses the active versions, as D365 does.

  1. Click the top line (the item).
  2. Under BOM and route, choose another BOM or Route. For each version the list shows whether it is active, the site, from which quantity and until which date it applies, and its name.
  3. The calculator reloads the item with that version.

A note then appears: "You are calculating with another version than the active one." D365's own cost calculation keeps using the active version. Back to the active versions undoes your choice.

The choice applies only to the item itself, not to sub-assemblies.

What-if: changing and adding lines

  • Click a line and change a field. On a changed field, reset puts the D365 value back.
  • + Operation: choose a resource; its cost categories are filled in.
  • + Item: a manufactured item comes with its route and BOM.
  • + Free line: your own description and price.
  • + Subcontract: by default a price per piece, or a fixed amount per lot.
  • + Surcharge: a percentage on material, on conversion or on the total.
  • Delete removes a line. You can undo that from the message at the bottom.

The Reload button fetches the route, BOM and cost prices from D365 again. Your changes are lost.

Margin

Enter a Sales price per unit to see the margin, or a Margin % to see the matching price. In the product details, Use as sales price puts D365's base sales price in the field.

Under D365 for comparison you see the cost price according to D365 with the difference: green up to 2 %, orange up to 10 %, red above that.

Saving and sharing calculations

This needs the right Save and share cost calculations. Without it, your changes stay only in the window.

  • Your first change creates your own concept; after that it is saved automatically. Calculations are stored encrypted on the DynSolutionZ server, not on your PC.
  • Calculations shows My calculations, Shared, In review and Archive.
  • Share with everyone who has the calculator, or with chosen colleagues. They see the version as you shared it; later changes only show once you share again.
  • Submit for review; a reviewer can Approve or Reject (with a reason). You can't review your own calculation.
  • A colleague's calculation is read-only. With Make a copy you continue in your own copy.
  • A concept you haven't opened or changed for 90 days is deleted. Shared calculations are kept.

When you open a saved calculation, the calculator recalculates it with today's price list. If the amount has changed, you see both: when saved and with the current price list.

Exporting

Export creates an Excel file with the breakdown, quantity breaks for lots of 1, 10, 100 and 1000, and notes.

Note

The calculation has been checked against D365 for a number of items and matches there. In rare cases (setup time of sub-assemblies, some process times) the result can still differ. If in doubt, compare with D365 for comparison.
